Posted March 09, 2020 10:16:23As a child, I grew up in New York City.
I grew into my teens and my twenties.
I loved the city.
It was my playground.
I would see my friends, go for walks, do whatever I could to make myself feel better.
And I’d see myself doing it.
I’d do it with a smile on my face.
I’d do that with a laugh on my lips.
But the day that I started going to work in New England, the feeling was different.
I didn’t want to leave.
I started taking classes at the local high school.
I was really nervous.
But I really liked it, and I was good at it.
Then, one day, I went to a job interview.
I remember the person was the person who hired me.
They asked me about my career, and then they said, “Oh, we want to hire you for your experience in the retail trade.”
I went, “What?
I’m a retail trade person?
No, that’s not what I do.
I’m not a retail person.”
I thought, “I’ve been in the trade for a long time.
I’ve never been told anything.
I don’t know what this is.
I just want to get to work.”
So I took my resume to the person and I said, I don.
I say, “Well, can you get me an email about this?
I’d like to talk to the director of the department, who is in charge of recruiting for retail.”
So the person said, Yeah, but it’s really hard to get an email.
So I say to him, “Yeah, let me give you a call.”
And he says, “Sure.”
So I called him.
He said, Well, I’m in charge, I can give you an email, I’ll call you when I get it.
So he called me and I hung up.
I had been in a trade for four years, and the people I had been working with had been there for 10 years, five of those years as a customer service representative.
It’s been the same for me.
I got my first job in a store, in an office.
I started at a store that I worked for a year, then I went into a store where I worked the next year.
So it’s been a gradual transition.
I never thought I’d ever be in a job where I could do a full day’s work.
I never thought it would happen.
And then I started to do it.
It has been like a journey.
I have no regrets.
I had a great experience.
And the people who have been with me, they have been amazing.
I’ve always been kind to my family.
And they have a wonderful life.
I have no doubt that I’ll be able to do something for them.
I think I will.
