Elon Musk has said that he thinks Tesla Motors’ business model is so complex and difficult that it “doesn’t even require a PhD” to understand it.
Speaking to The Verge in an interview at the Autopilot launch event, Musk said he believes Tesla will “win” in the long run because it is a company that makes a product that “works and is very profitable”.
“We are a company which makes a very, very complex product and it’s a very good product, but at the end of the day, people are going to buy it,” he said.
“It’s not about just making cars, and that’s the fundamental problem.”
The Tesla CEO, who also runs SpaceX and SpaceX’s SpaceX X spacecraft company, said the company’s success has more to do with how it operates.
“If you think about what we do, it is an extraordinary company,” he told The Verge.
“The business model, the economics of the company, it just works.”
Musk said that in addition to the company building a car, it also makes its own batteries.
“We make our own batteries, we make the whole thing ourselves.
We make all our own electronics,” he explained.”
All our power and all our power electronics, our software, our control electronics, all of our sensors.
We have all the parts to make the thing work, so it’s really a pretty simple business.”
In the interview, Musk also talked about Tesla’s plans for the future, such as the company working with companies such as Boeing and the US military to develop the next generation of military aircraft.
“One of the things that’s really exciting about this, which I think is a big part of what we have going for us, is the ability to be a really good customer for Boeing, which we’ve always wanted to be,” he added.
“And that has been our goal, to be able to be an amazing customer for the military.”
“I think you’ll see us working with Boeing, and I think you’re going to see us helping them out a little bit,” he joked.
Musk’s comments about the military, however, were not entirely serious.
“I don’t know if we can talk about it yet, but I think we’re doing a great job,” he insisted.
“So many of the guys are working on something that is going to be fantastic for the American military.
I’m sure we’ll see more of it.
But it’s all in the planning stage right now.”
